Quality
The result is a hard rim with a ductile core, giving higher yield strength, good ductility and weldability with a low carbon equivalent.
A billet with low carbon and manganese enters the mill, keeping the carbon equivalent low.
The billet is rolled to the finished bar profile with rolled-in identification marks.
The bar surface is rapidly cooled with water, forming a hardened martensitic rim.
Residual heat from the core tempers the rim, balancing hardness and toughness.
The bar cools on the bed, leaving a fine grained ductile core.
Bars stored in humid conditions develop a surface discoloration. It is superficial and does not affect strength, ductility, bending performance or bond with concrete. Long-term studies confirm this.
